When the infamous Prohibition banned the selling and manufacturing of alcohol in the United States from 1919-1933, it didn’t slow the nation. The ‘Roaring 20s’ characterized a decade of illegal alcohol smuggling, underground bars, flapper girls, cultural dynamism and entertaining parties.
The picture is based upon a found photograph from the prohibition era. The five dancers in this image were performing the Charleston in the street, each mounted on a large block of ice!
For reasons of health and safety I have repositioned them on solid art-deco podia and matching backdrop. I hope this has not diminished the energy, enthusiasm and sensuality that they generated in protest at the outrageous and largely unsuccessful Prohibition movement.
The edition of 10 is a four colour lino reduction print made at the BIP Print Studios in Kemp Town, Brighton. It is printed on Canaletto 300gsm acid free paper using oil based relief printing inks. The Columbian press used for this work was built in 1844.
