The Roller Coaster
This image was designed and printed to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the first roller coaster to incorporate wheeled vehicles running on tracks.
The Les Montagnes Russes a Belleville was built in Paris in 1817 and featured wheeled cars securely locked to a wooden track with guide rails to keep them on course. Surprisingly the technology hardly changed until 1959 when Disney introduced tubular steel tracks allowing the vehicles to incorporate loops, corkscrews and many other more exotic variants of the original up, down and round trajectories.
This abstracted four colour lino reduction print is loosely based upon Grace Robertson’s iconic 1950’s black and white image ‘Luna Park’
